Willow control in Tyers Park
Willow control is underway on the Tyers River downstream of
the Moondarra Dam. Initially, the extent
of the willow infestation was determined by contractors kayaking down the river
and logging their location using GPS. At the
moment the willows are being carefully treated with herbicide in a manner which
results in minimal risk to the environment. It is hoped that the works will be completed
this month. Follow up treatment will take
place over the next two years.
The works are being funded by a grant of $70,000 under the
State Governments Communities for Nature program. The Friends of Tyers Park
were successful in obtaining the grant and are working together with Parks
Victoria to manage the control works.
Jim Stranger, Convener of the Friends group, said that the local
community is very fortunate to have such a wild and scenic resource as the
Tyers Park on its back doorstep and that the willow control works would help
retain the river, which runs through the park, in its natural state.
